History Snapshots

"It is an abiding difficulty in science that perspective is distorted because the structure of scientific knowledge makes its own history seem irrelevant"

John Maddox
"What Remains to be Discovered"

Experience has shown that many scientists - particularly the younger ones - wish to know more about the circumstances surrounding a discovery and the personalities of the discoverers rather than just having a name attached to a technique or event. It is in the hope of satisfying some of this legitimate curiosity (as well as my own) that this section of the site has been initiated.
Of course most of this material is "second hand", copied or otherwise derived from writings of earlier biographers but in some cases it does come from the scientists themselves. Wherever possible I've tried to make acknowledgements and leave some kind of reference trail so that readers can follow and check sources. Please don't regard these pages as any kind of balanced or scholarly work - they contain deliberate bias (because the "facts" have been selected with a view to making a story) and accidental error (minimised wherever possible or pointed out) but that said it is hoped that this collection of material, some not easily found elsewhere is, if not useful, then at least interesting.

So far the pages include:-

Follow the links at the top of the page - the techniques are described from a general point of view rather than just that of surface analysis.
As you travel deeper into each section then more specific topics are examined.
